art.les.nyc studios and GANJ1 are excited to announce "Mind-f-Art" - a
collaborative show with artists SEN ONE and Dmitry Gubin on Friday,
August 22rd at 7pm till midnight.
The evening will examine the political
strife concerning the current state of our country, and the title,
"Mind-f-Art" calls on the condition of our political conscious. The show
will feature new work by both artists, as well as a joint collaborative
piece.
SEN ONE's fascination for art started early on when he witnessed
the rolling canvas otherwise known as the subway system of New York
City. Growing up in both NYC and New Jersey he was presented with
various styles and concepts, which he interpreted visually.
Dmitry
Gubin was born on October 6, 1975 in Kharkov, USSR (now Ukraine). His
father, a Jewish dissident artist, was the first to introduce Dmitry to
art and was responsible for Dmitry's initial art education. After
receiving a refugee status Dmitry and his family have emigrated to the
US in 1989. Gubin is inspired by the works of German Expressionists,
Abstract Expressionists, graffiti writers, as well as urban decay.
The evening will also feature live performances by
singer/songwriter Dev Jana, and San Francisco based artist, GANJ1.
As
usual at art.les.nyc studios, The Tiki Bar located in the Jamaican
Lounge will be full stocked with Grog-n-Scrod Sangria and a selection of
beers and water for a humble suggested donation price.

Junge Kuratoren - Ein Projekt von Katharina Senn und Sydney Ogidan. Die Gabriele Senn Galerie unterstützt dieses Projekt und stellt hierfür die Räumlichkeiten der Galerie zur Verfügung. Erste Ausstellung:
Fotografien.
An interactive coloring book exhibition for a good cause/
Montréal’s Under Pressure international graffiti festival and Galerie d’art Yves Laroche - come together for a new interactive exhibition: Color Me Bad. Over the past 13 years, Under Pressure has invited over 30 artists to produce original artwork for the covers of their magazine and their annual event limited edition t-shirts. Now, these images will be transferred and stretched onto canvas stripped down to a basic outline: like a coloring book. Proceeds from the event will be going towards the Montreal Children’s Hospital Foundation.
Color Me Bad invites artists and guests, including children and adults, to draw on the canvases using crayons. Being silently auctioned off throughout the evening, proceeds raised from the canvases and catalogues will be donated to the Montreal Children’s Hospital Foundation.
Also exhibiting will be a Wall of Fame portrait series of emerging and established graffiti artists by Danny Portieous, taken at last year’s Under Pressure festival.
Coloring book catalogues will be for sale, with profits going to the Montreal Children’s Hospital. This event is free and all ages. Peep the tees in chrono order. Sneak Peeks.

In conjunction with Giant Robot, Scion presents Insiders, Outsiders & The Middle at its 4,500 square foot Installation L.A. Gallery. At Giant Robot, the definition of art ranges from straight contemporary painting to sculpted figures (which were considered action figures just a few years ago). This exhibition celebrates not the disparate mediums, but the divergent mindsets of artists--as well as the gray areas.
Insiders are artists who work so hard in front of their computers that they don't leave their chairs long enough to hang their pieces on walls. More often, their art is found onscreen, in print, and on T-shirts. Adrian Johnson is an example from the U.K., with a retro drawing style inspired by children's books. The other Insiders are from Japan. Noriko Ashino runs the A Piece of Design firm, and specializes in a variety of disciplines including character design and graphics. Sometimes known as ZariganiWorks, the duo of Taro Mukasa and Yoshitane Sakamoto are responsible for the infamous Suicide Bomb Button, have created the Kore Janai Robo (which has gone from handmade wood figurines to vinyl characters with a TV show), and freelance design toys, characters, and products.
Outsiders include Space Invader, a street artist from Paris who makes his mark on walls around the world and calls each tiled piece an "invasion." He painstakingly documents each one before it gets ripped down—either by city workers or collectors—and publishes his work in books and maps. Kami is revered as a graffiti legend in Tokyo and has successfully transitioned from the streets to art galleries. His pieces often resemble flowing water.
And then there's The Middle. The original work of Kyoto-based Shinya Yamamoto has been found in many exhibitions as well as the drum set of Sonic Youth's Steve Shelley. Part Basquiat and part left-brain madness, his style is free flowing and dreamy. Nao Harada, proprietor of the Wrecks clothing line, sketches, draws, and paints with no regard to the meaning of art. He rides around on his BMX leaving stickers and tags around Tokyo. The lone American in the group, Ed Trask, is from Virginia. He tours constantly as the drummer for the veteran punk band Avail. Through painting, he recalls and reinterprets the slices of Americana that he sees on the road. Although there is no obvious correlation between the artists, they form a powerful cross-section of creative forces that are physically active with their art. They belie the image of the stationary artist and pose the question of how they will co-exist in a restrained gallery setting.

New Paintings, Drawings, Sculpture and Limited Edition Giclées by Miss
Van and Victor Castillo
OPENING RECEPTION: SATURDAY, 26 JULY, 19:00 – 22:00 H
EXHIBITION DATES: 26 JULY – 23 AUGUST 2008
GALLERY HOURS: TUESDAY – SATURDAY, 12:00 – 18:00
Merry Karnowsky Gallery Berlin is proud to present CANTO NEGRO Y
BRUJERIAS, featuring the paintings of Barcelona-based artists Miss Van
(France) and Victor Castillo (Chile). The two unfold their unique but
harmonious iconographies in a pictorial exercise of intersecting ideas.
These artists approach from their personal perspectives subjects like
seduction, desire, enchantment, and the game of infantile cruelty. The
title of the exhibition attempts to unite these proposals and at the
same time, alludes to Spanish culture, superstition and witchcraft as
basic context, and dark invocations of common ghosts.
The "poupees" of Miss Van, always surrounded in sensational
atmospheres, embody the surrounding energies of the loving spell that
they seduce and catch. All are portrayed in mystical scenarios, between
meditation and liberation of evil, introspection and exorcism. Through
their closed eyes, we enter into the private worlds of each, reflecting
on their dark side and feminine fragility. Miss Van's work has shown in
the United States, France, England, Austria, Italy, Spain, the
Netherlands, Switzerland, Belgium, Germany and Australia.
Victor Castillo shows us a mixture of classic and comic painting
loaded with infantile personages of subjects: macabre, joy, seduction
and the unscrupulous pleasures of the destruction game. At the same time
he also makes references to contemporary realities and a new
generation's stimulations from the increasing bombardment by the media.
Castillo's work has shown in Spain, Chile, Argentina, Brazil, the United
States, Canada, Belgium and Taiwan.

BLVD Gallery proudly presents "Pneumonia, Isolation, and Disorder" a show of new works by Deuce 7. Deuce 7 is a graffiti artist from Minneapolis who is also part of a burgeoning underground subculture of Freight train hoppers. He travels across the country riding the rails, painting his work on trains, in tunnels, squats, and wherever he can do his thing. Deuce 7's approach to graffiti comes not from a cultural identity like hip hop but from his love of the Railroad and it's history. He grew up train spotting, living in front of a huge railyard, and after noticing the colorful graffiti on the rail cars he decided that this would be a way for him to contribute to rail culture.
Deuce 7's work shares the flavor of the "Hobo" Glyphs that rail workers have marked freight cars with for over a century while propelling the look into the 21st century with his studied handstyles and vibrant color schemes. In 2007 Deuce7 made a trip to NYC to do graffiti and experience the Mecca of Street Art. After 2 short weeks he had taken the city by storm and was profiled in the Village Voice with the tagline "Is a guy from Minnesota the new king of New York street art?", A very impressive achievement for a previously unknown graffiti artist from the midwest in a city renowned for it's dislike of intruding outsiders.
This will be his first solo show of drawings and paintings on the West Coast.

Art Installation by Chicago artist Erik DeBat aka RISK
Piccolo, 859 N. Damen at Iowa in Ukrainian Village
Saturday, March 8th, 2008 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. - Summer 2008
Chicago--Enjoy a night of neighborhood art, refreshments and Italian
fare at Piccolo, 859 N. Damen at Iowa in Chicago's Ukrainian Village.
Artist Erik DeBat aka RISK will unveil a recent large-scale urban
painting installation accompanied by some of his minimalist aerosol can
sculptures.
RISK, the Chicago painter and designer began his career on Chicago's
rapid transit lines in the early 1980s, joining in the then underground
sub-culture of graffiti art and hip-hop. RISK was among the first wave
of talented Chicago urban artists to make their transition from the
streets and begin to exhibit and sell their paintings in galleries.
Throughout the late 80s RISK began seriously working on commissions for
interior designers and private collectors. He met and painted with the
late pop artist Keith Haring in 1989, while working on a mural project
in conjunction with Chicago Public Schools and the Chicago Cultural
Center's then budding arts program Gallery 37.
In the 90s, RISK attended School of the Art Institute of Chicago where
he studied graphic design, collage, photography and painting.
Manufactured two street ware lines which he and partners exported to
Japan and sold throughout the U.S., RISK continues to make his art, work
on private commissions, and produce limited edition designs from his
studio in Chicago's North Lakeview.
Guest DJs will be spinning assortment of low-key rhythms, appetizers
and refreshments will be served throughout the evening. For more info on

Sea No Evil
Art benefit to preserve and protect the oceans of the world
On Saturday July, 12th 2008 the Sea No Evil Art Benefit will take place at the Riverside Art Museum located in the historic Downtown District of Riverside, California . To Die For is once again proud to work with Monster Media and give something back to the beautiful creatures of our ocean . This Art benefit is to raise money and awareness for Captain Paul Watson Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, a non-profit organization that is passionately dedicated to preserving the health of the worlds ocean and saving endangered mammals that are needlessly and mercilessly hunted and brutally slaughtered for nefarious purposes.
All of the staff at To Die For feel very passionately about this cause and the importance to help create public awareness . After the success we had with last years event featuring artists such as Shepherd Fairy form OBEY and our very own DEPH from To Die For we have kept the momentum going and have brought together what we think are some of the best tattooists in the world to donate artwork. On top of this, RVCA have also donated their time and art with some amazing pieces . All of the the donated art will be available for purchase through silent auction bidding on Saturday 12th July 2008.
Everything about this benefit is amazing, says To Die For co-owner Jason Welsher. To see this many people come together for such a special cause is inspiring and the support we've had from the To Die For artists donating their art and time is something we are truly grateful for.
Captain Paul Watson , Founder of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, will speak about the importance of his life's work. Renowned artist Shepherd Fairey will DJ in the art gallery and acclaimed singer songwriter Matt Costa will Perform on the roof of the museum. Free drinks will be provided to guests compliments of Sambazon, VeeV, and Imperial.
By supporting an event like this you'll walk away knowing you have done something positive and helped an amazing cause. With your help we can make a difference . We look forward to seeing you all on July 12th .
Sea No Evil came about when Riverside residents Derric and Erin Swinfard decided to take up a cause and use their networking for the good of the world’s oceans. They rounded up friends, artists, and business owners to create an art benefit that raised more than $30,000.

GRAPHOPOLI: World's 1st Urban Art Biennale
The Puerto Rico Museum of Art (MAPR) announced last May the selection
of the artists for its upcoming project, Graphopoli, the World's 1st
Urban Art Biennale, which will take place in Puerto Rico this summer
from July 7th to the 20th. This innovative cultural program curated by
Celina Nogueras Cuevas, will impact many of the main cities of Puerto
Rico's including San Juan, Ponce, Caguas and Mayaguez which supported
the event as host municipalities, assigning outdoor spots where
simultaneous interventions will take place by urban artists.
With an open call for entries, the MAPR and the selection committee
have drawn the best urban artists to participate in a contest where they
will paint giant-scale structures. The jury composed by international
figures like infamous Miss 17 from NY and artist/editor of Swindle
Magazine, Sonik (Boston) and local professionals selected from over 40
submissions. The selection is composed by two categories which include
Solo and Crew.. The first include artists such as: Bik-ismo, Sofía,
Justsez, Larregui, Pun18 and Nepo; and the second composed by ADM,
Corografico and OS. The artists would have an exceptional opportunity
to intervene large scale uncommon places such as a water pump, a student
residence building, sport center roof, a lighthouse viewpoint and a
water tank, among others.
"This is an unprecedented event that will transform Puerto Rico into
a World Capital of Urban Art", stated Celina Nogueras Cuevas, curator
and coordinator of the project. Since the 90Zs, Puerto Rico has
captivated the attention of Urban Artists from around the world. Many
international personalities such as, Brasilian artist Os Gemeos, and
American artists Shepard Fairey and Swoon, had come to the island to
spread their art, exhibiting their unique urban style and techniques in
alternative spaces.. "These important pieces have become part of the
Urban Art Movement legacy, enriching our artistic patrimony created by
Puerto Rican artist like Lee Quiñones, Dzine and many emergent figures
that are defining the new generation of urban artists."
Graphopoli, the 1st urban art Biennale of Puerto Rico and the world
is a project developed by the MAPR with the collaboration of UBS
Financial Services of Puerto Rico and CEO Miguel Antonio Ferrer. In
addition of the hosting municipalities, Graphopoli count with the

"Hairy Metal Vengence"
new works by Bigfoot
June 13 - July 5, 2008
Reception June 13 6p - 10p
BLVD Gallery is proud to present the work of Oakland based artist Bigfoot.
Bigfoot is a Bay area Graffiti legend and has been a major influence in the skateboard
industry for close to a decade. Originally from New Jersey ,young Bigfoot fled to California to be closer to big trees . Disassociated from art school and human society, in 1994 he started writing "Bigfoot" in the streets of San Francisco with relentless fury .Working often with house paint and wooden panels ,his work depicts the conflict between the respect for nature held by the artist's cast of Bigfoot characters and the destructive agenda of mankind. Despite his reclusive nature, Bigfoot has managed to stay active in society ,designing skateboard graphics and footwear ,showing in galleries in America and Japan, and the release of his vinyl figure with Strangeco in 2004. His eponymous character and his love of heavy metal play a major role in his studio work as well as his highly recognized street art. Please join us at his opening reception Friday June 13 to Meet the artist and Ride the Lightning.
It's going to be hot, we've got 10 different artists from all over the
globe showing. Award winning Scottish artist, Kirsty Whiten, alongside
SuzyQ, artist in residence at Central St.Martins, who makes work
inspired by her Scottish heritage.
Ali Wyllie, co-founder of Recoat will
be showing again, under his alias REKOR, plus two well-known, prolific,
Glasgow based Graffiti artists, GAZMAC and EJEK.
We've invited ASKEW, a
writer we met out in New Zealand, to show some of his new photography
work. John Grider is sending stencil work over from Minneapolis, he just

Exposition M.A.C. Crew

Channel 1 presents "The Block Party" for Ideat Village at Pitkin
Plaza on Saturday June 14, 2008, the first day of Festival of Arts and
Ideas . Join Channel 1 for one of the most unique urban experiences to
transpire in recent New Haven history. We teamed up with graffiti
writers, breakdancers, Gourmet Kickz, and Ego Trip's Sacha Jenkins and
Chino BYI
to produce an event that plays back to the community spirit of the early
80's.
Channel 1 has secured 100 ft of wall space for an aerosol jam.
Pre-registration suggested for wall space. B boys and B girls will be in
full effect for our breakdancing competition. Eight crews will compete
in a 3-man jam for prizes and fame.
For those with literary interests,
we present a book signing with Sacha Jenkins and Dave "Chino" Villorente.
Sacha Jenkins is a member of Ego Trip, the hip-hop media collective,
and a producer of VH1's new reality contest Miss Rap Supreme and The
White Rapper Show. Chino is a graff writer, journalist and published
author who has been illuminating the NY landscape with his art for over
20 years. These two will be doing a live signing of their recently
released collaborative title called "Piecebook: The Secret Drawings of
Graffiti Writers."
