Aerosol Warfare Gallery On Wednesday, November 3rd 2004, (after the 2004 USA Presidential Elections) many Americans awoke rejoicing, others awoke in disbelief, wondering "what just happened?". The headlines read, "The People Have Spoken!"... but, is this really what the 'people' were saying? Aerosol Warfare Gallery, through Red vs Blue, is providing an outlet for total freedom of (artistic) expression. Top Artists and Designers from across the United States and from around the world have voiced their opinion via 11"x17" poster art. The love/hate towards the 2004 elections, the process, the outcome, the media influence, and the future of the American Dream are just a few of the themes reflected in the exhibition. The 'Red vs Blue' exhibition steps to promote dialog and unification in this divided nation. open the lines of communication between the Republicans and the Democrats, between the Independents and the Undecided, between the Left Wing Liberals and Right Wing Conservatives, Between the Haves and the Have-Nots, Between the Voices that are heard and the Voices Ignored. He recently released his first book, Stencil Pirates: A Global Survey of Street Stenciling (Soft Skull Press). When not destroying his lungs with spraypaint or getting sticky with wheatpaste, he organizes the Celebrate People's History Poster Series and works with larger groups of artists to create giant collective cultural events like the Department of Space and Land Reclamation and the Autonomous Territories of Chicago. Josh will share a slide show history of street stenciling and discussion of expression in public space. Melissa Klein lives in San Francisco, where she writes and illustrates the fiction zine Inkling, performs short plays and monologues, and works with her punk community to create humorous political street theater. She recently co-edited, with Sara Jaffe, the audiozine Long Ago and Right Now, a compilation of songs and stories about San Francisco. Melissa's new book, Looking and Other Stories, is a collaboration with artist Sara Thustra. It includes work from her zines as well as stories that have appeared in Punk Planet, the anthology It's All Good (Manic D Press) and elsewhere. She will be reading from this book, with pictures projected for your multisensory enjoyment. Jennifer Whiteford teaches, writes, and goes to rock shows in Ottawa, Ontario. Her six year old perzine, Matilda has won rave reviews and spawned her online journal Matilda Says. Last year, she released The Mattie Stories, a collection of short fiction one reviewer called "the Vinyl Cafe for indie rockers." Up until very recently, Jennifer played guitar and sang with the all-girl all-rock Ottowa band Sophomore Level Psychology. Her first novel, Grrrl, is currently in publishing purgatory, but she will read excerpts from it on tour anyway. Watch out, she'll be using her "teenage voice."

polltically inspired prints The tradition of poster art being used as a medium of protest/activism is a long and rich one. Artists/designers for decades have been using posters to voice the opinions of the masses. Issue H of Beautiful/Decay focuses on artists and designers who work in the political/activist realm voicing their opinions via their medium. To go with the release of Issue: H, B/D has teamed up with Subject Matter gallery to show the work of 14 artists in the form of Activist Poster art. * 100% of the profits from this show will go to the Charity Food Not Bombs they are a amazing organization that actually gets things done. What they do is simple, they feed good food to homeless people all over the world. FNB is one of the only organizations that actually takes all of the money it gets and puts it direct use.

Black LetterAn exhibition of new paintings by O.Two. Using hooded themes and veiled motives, O.Two has created a new collection of work based around the written type-form. The new work painted for the exhibition is a snap-shot of the fractured typography and ornate interpretations of New York graffiti that have emerged from the artist's illegal pieces. Black Letter draws together the two sides of the artist's creative identity and offers a glimpse of the guilty rhythm running behind the work. Private View Thursday November 18th. 7pm to 10pm Open 19/11/04 until 16/12/04

OFF THE WALL 04 - Transforming Style: Graffiti weitergedacht
OFF THE WALL zeigt Kunst, die herkömmliche Sparten aufbricht und neu befruchtet. Hier verschmelzen Stilrichtungen.

3 New Graffiti Movies: Tagging Town & Country
Tentatively slated to introduce his magnum opus Who Is Bozo Texino?, Bill "Flight Risk" Daniel delivers the results of 20 years of dangerous documentation of hobo and railworker graffiti. Hand-crafted from hours of super-8 and 16mmfilm, freight-car interviews and campfire recordings, and copious photos of chalk and grease-pencil monikers, this subcultural survey narrates a very rare history of railroad's greatest graffiti legends. Also in person, Jon Parker's hour-plus Piece picks up the story in Œ70s SF, and painstakingly chronicles the generations of urban spray-painters since. Capping off this carnival of outsider art is Melinda Stone's marvelous new movie on sidewalk graffiti!

MARCOART AND DUROCIA.COM PROUDLY PRESENTS RON ENGLISH
SATURDAY NOVEMBER 20TH, 2004 7PM - 11PM POPagandist, billboard bandit, post-pop pundit, post-punk prankster, countercultural cartoonist, subvertising executive, culture-jammer. The artist with his finger on the pulse card of the nation. Ron English takes on the icons of pop culture and puts a little ìEnglishî on them. A Robin Hood of Madison Ave., Ron paints, perverts, infiltrates, reinvents and satirizes modern culture and its popular visual iconography on canvas, in song, and directly on his hundreds of pirated billboards. Ron exists as a pop culture anomaly, somewhere between a cartoon Abbie Hoffman and a grown-up, real life Bart Simpson, delivering a steady stream of customized imagery laden with strong socio-political undertones, adolescent boy humor, subversive pop-culture savvy, and Dali meets Disney technique. Dedicated to finding the sublime in the everyday and breaking the didactic approach to art and life, Rom has offered up an alternative universe where nothing is sacred, everything is subverted, and thereís always room for a little good-natured fun.

Quik Deurne 30-10- 2004 ZONDAG 14 NOVEMBER VINDT OP HEIKANT 20 OM 14u DE OPNENING PLAATS VAN NIEUWE WERKEN VAN LIN FELTON (QUIK) DOOR DE CURATOR VAN HET GRONINGER MUSEUM STEVEN KOLSTEREN. These newest works once again reflect the unbridled freedom I maintain here in Holland as an artist. The culturally diverse and radically progressive nature of the Eurpean art community has once again fostered and laid a new platformlike foundation for my recent expressions. No longer am I trapped, confined nor manacled by the chains bound to the New York graffiti culture. I create a furious calamity when I paint, yet this fury is my voice……my freedom”.

PARTS AND LABORfrom NY – new works by: AJ Fosik * Monster Project * kgbe RotGutArtists' Reception: First Frday November 5th, 8 p.m. 'til late
Music by: DJ Aidan AJ Fosik is originally from Detroit, now hailing from Brooklyn. He combines images and iconography carefully collected and scavenged from past traditions both real and fabricated which are interpreted and woven together to create a trenchant body of work that is equal parts signage, folly and hard luck story. Monster Project looks to give a face to the cannibalism of urban life, a face to that which is always eating itself, a face to that which is our Cities. Monster Project seeks to highlight the unnoticed, to find the forgotten. Monster Project is about pointing out what is already here around us with the hope that it may encourage the act of looking around. Monster Project looks to inspire the act of taking a moment to stop and to see again. Monster Project is about noticing the beauty that naturally happens in these places we call City. Over the past four years, the Monster Project team has created site-specific installations focusing on forgotten corners. Often requiring extensive planning and late night execution, each piece becomes a story, each installation and adventure. No two are exactly the same, as no two locations are ever identical. Conceived in Providence, Rhode Island in November of 2000, Monsters have feasted on Providence, Boston, New York and Rome, Italy. kgbe Rotgut has become a prominent figure in the illegal street art movement in NY over the past couple of years. Much like his work on the street, the pieces in this show are inspired by and use materials found in the blighted urban areas of North American cities. His newest series of paintings and sculptures blend the convoluted complexity of 19th century maps of America with the raw beauty of rusted metal and chipped paint. Obscure vestiges of our nation’s sordid past are constructed in new ways to form a unique visual experience.

HUB of activity at: Project Row Houses show / deadline November 13-14, 2004 Public space is ours, the people who live, work, and play in it; and accordingly we should reclaim it with our culture, with our creativity, and with autonomy. It has become common to see wheatpaste, graffiti, and protest banners, but also there is a variety of other projects which have taken over the urban enviroment. The Dumpster Hub will remind people of street artists' props as well as serve as walls for presentation. We will set up a convergence in Houston for 48 hours of non-stop occupation, intervention, recreation, and re-invention of public space away from the Project Row Houses Campus. We hope to provide a center of operations, establish a hub from which projects will radiate out across Houston. The emphasis of this campaign is on the creative usage and appropriation of public space by autonomous individuals and groups from all walks of life. As such we welcome submissions from artists and non-artists alike Participants will present their documentation of their projects on Tri-fold boards (like the ones from Science Fair) and possibly disseminate propaganda or art to other participants. This is to encourage and support a community of public space reclaimers and the projects that exist there, A schedule of events will be presented including specified discussions on public space, skillshares, and demonstrations of techniques. We hope to set up documentation crews, propaganda crews, art crews, to roam the city and bring back their energy. We are hoping participants will bring these guidelines into the Hub (proposals should have one or more of these points in mind): 1) The project is specifically geared towards reclaiming space in the Houston Area (we will try to assist, but participants must work out the details of their spatial reclamations). Site-specificity (e.g. - the Metro Rail at Main and Alabama) and site-generality (e.g. - public transportation) are equally acceptable but should be stated to help us better organize. 2) The project provides free materials from "Hub" to visitors/participants for distribution, installation, and/or operation in public space (i.e. - stickers, 'zines, posters, smoke bombs, stencils, condoms, how-to manuals, noise-makers, first-aid kits, handcuff keys, kites, etc, etc, etc). 3) The project is interactive, collaborative, and/or relational with other individuals, groups, participants or visitors (i.e. - workshops, teach-ins, cooking, legal services, scavenger hunts, bike rides, protests, blood drives, etc, etc, etc). These types of projects may take place at the "Hub", or may use the headquarters as a meeting place/laboratory. 4) All projects will be video-documented or photographed and screened on monitors at the "Hub". A corresponding city map will allow visitors to reference the project and its location in the urban environment. 5) Although the campaign will be occurring around-the-clock, individual projects are not bound to any spatial or temporal restrictions. Deadline is the opening: It will be November 13-14 at Project Row Houses in Houston's 3rd Ward. scatterbraincollective@hotmail.com

Gallery Hours: Lost In _ _ _ _ _
Opening October 23rd. 6-9pm 4-F is pleased to present Lost In _ _ _ _ _, a show that gathers the work of two Los Angeles based painters, Christofer Chin (Tofer) and Amir H. Fallah. Although disparate in their painting techniques each artists’ work demonstrates fantastic environments, which act as a background for elusive activities and narratives filling the foregrounds of the work. In some of the large and small-scale paintings by Christofer Chin (Tofer) random limbs and faceless, figures seem to disappear and re-surface while eerily moving through murky fog filled landscapes. These scenarios allude to dream states where somnambulists roam undisturbed through anonymous locations. In this body of work Chin is exploring how dreams are utilized as a way to grasp onto the fragments of childhood memories often repressed in the process of maturation. Amir H. Fallah presents multiple large and small scale paintings where flat, graphic passages are mixed with faux, expressionist swatches of paint; Morrissey lyrics are side by side with detailed patterning; and love notes to female painters, professing his love for their work, are clumsily stacked on top of one another. Fallah’s paintings deal with a more personalized and humorous approach to the often regressive and progressive commute between adolescence and adulthood.

MASH-UP @ Vessel GalleryNACE*CHIP*JERSEYJOE*NAVY8*MERES*JUAN DOE*AL PADRINO*many more
VESSEL Gallery FRIDAY, OCTOBER 8th, 7PM-11PM MASH-UP is an inspired collection of new work from emerging artists working to challenge the techniques and forms of traditional mediums. In a hostile world that demands constant evolution, these artists offer a bold new perspective on creating and interacting with visual statements by calling into question the constraints that dictate the art world. Through a wide collection of work drawing from multiple mediums, one begins to see more commonalities than differences; suddenly, a video composite becomes a moving painting, aerosol artists become this generation's historians. VESSEL Gallery is a fresh urban gallery and retail space seeking to inspire and progress the work of creatively ambitious, emerging talent. Located in the heart of industrial Brooklyn, the gallery is a malleable receptacle for the artistic visions of a new generation unafraid of exploding the boundaries of high and low, old and new. A collaborative endeavor with Mathmatiks Lifestyle and Design, the space radically redefines the retail experience by exploring the multiplicity of artistic mediums within an urban consumer outlet.

S.F. REPRESENT: A STREET ART CELEBRATION: THE LIBERATION OF EXPRESSIONFOR THE PEOPLEA study into the global, contemporary street art movement, celebrating the cause and freedom of limitless artistic expression, ""for the people" is being created by a coalition of street artists, inviting the community to share an in-depth analysis of this culture's meaning(s), progressions, and digressions. This will be a legal event with progress in mind and a celebration for the street artists and our local communities. We are street artists trying to independently reclaim the street art movement for the people. "For the People" will be moving the street indoors for a weekend and inviting the street art loving community to view works of art from an international array of street artists. This promises to be the biggest underground street art celebration on the west coast in years!
This whitewall gallery art exhibition will be held at:
Contact: "For the People" was created by, and is represented by: Empte Eyes, in affiliation with stencilarchive.org and God Bless Graffiti Coalition. This event is an attempt to speak out against the Big Buff of 2003, benefit the upcoming street art documentary "Negative Spaces" and to benefit local graffiti artist's legal fees, who are currently facing felony charges in S.F. California judges tell us that this group of graffiti artists are classified as a gang and can be arrested under gang related charges for art related crimes. Crews have been followed, investigated, and arrested for public writing.
